Flexible Gastrointestinal Scopes

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopies are performed using IV conscious sedation. A colonoscopy is a flexible scope that allows for complete visualization of the entire colon. During the procedure, samples of any growths can be collected for biopsy, and precancerous and cancerous polyps can be removed.

Up to 80 percent of colon cancer deaths can be prevented by timely removal of precancerous polyps.

Polyps are growths within the colon that occur fairly commonly as people grow older. While polyps frequently are benign, they also can be precancerous. If polyps are detected and removed in their benign, precancerous or early cancerous stages, deaths and later surgeries can be avoided.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)

An EGD is also performed using IV conscious sedation. This procedure is a flexible scope procedure that allows for complete visualization of the entire esophagus, stomach and first portion of the small bowel. During this procedure direct visualization of inflammation, ulcers, and/or reflux is obtained. Tissue samples can be taken and polyps can be removed.
